MINNEAPOLIS -- Richard Pitino called his teams 37-point win over Georgia Southern a major step forward, but not because of the point total. It was more how his players shared the ball against their overmatched nonconference opponents.Dupree McBrayer scored 18 points and Akeem Springs added 16 off the bench to lead the Gophers over Georgia Southern 86-49 on Friday night for their third straight win.Minnesota (9-1) had 23 assists and 12 3-pointers -- both season highs, and Pitino said his players were passing up good shots for great ones. And with three more games before the Big Ten portion of Minnesotas schedule starts, the Gophers got back on track after barely surviving against New Jersey Institute of Technology earlier in the week.He sat us down and told us we need to improve, Nate Mason said of the NJIT scare. Mason finished with 14 points and nine assists. Obviously we disrespected each other, not even him, but just each other. Didnt go out there and play for each other as hard as we possibly could. So we sat the guys down had a team meeting and said, `Weve got to come in and work the next day.Minnesota used an early second-half run to put the Eagles away after letting them hang around earlier. The Gophers built an 18-point lead midway through the first half before failing to score a field goal in the final five minutes of the half. But they took advantage of their speed and size to start the second, scoring 12 of their first 16 points of the half on dunks and fast breaks.I keep telling the guys: defend, rebound and run, Pitino said. Thats always kind of been my mentality with these guys. They did it, and I think the sharing of the ball, you could tell it was contagious. The Eagles (4-5), whove still never beaten a Big Ten team in school history, couldnt recover and lost their second straight after winning three in a row.Im embarrassed, Eagles coach Mark Byington said. We have some prideful guys in the locker room too, and theyre embarrassed too. Thats not what were all about and we didnt show up tonight.Ike Smith led Georgia Southern with 12 points and Jake Allsmiller added 11.Springs went 4 for 8 from 3-point range for Minnesota. He keyed an early 14-5 run with 11 points in three minutes to stretch Minnesotas first-half lead to 34-16. The Gophers slowed down after that, though, and didnt have a field goal in the final 5:09 of the first. The Eagles outscored Minnesota 16-11 to end the first and trailed 45-32 at halftime.BIG PICTUREGeorgia Southern: Playing against Minnesotas bigger and stronger players, the Eagles got only 16 combined points from backcourt duo Smith and Tookie Brown, who entered the game averaging nearly 36 points between them.Minnesota: The Gophers regained some momentum after narrowly surviving by six points against NJIT on Tuesday.ROAD WORRIESGeorgia Southern has three more road games in a brutal stretch to start the season, in which the Eagles play two of their first 12 games on their home court. Right now, we just lack some things, Byington said. Its on me. Its bad preparation. Its bad scheduling. The one thing weve got to do, as Ive told the guys, the only thing theyve got to worry about, is sticking together.HURTING FOR MINUTESMichael Hurt finished with seven points in six minutes, including his first-ever 3-pointer. Pitino praised the freshmans work ethic. They think if you work hard youre supposed to play, thats not always the case. My goal is to win the game, thats it. When youre able to reward guys like that to play, its really good.UP NEXTGeorgia Southern: Gets a rematch on Tuesday at Florida Gulf Coast, the team that snapped the Eagles three-game winning streak 85-82 last weekend.Minnesota: Continues its nonconference schedule when the Gophers host another 4-4 team, Northern Illinois, on Sunday. Cheap Hockey Jerseys . Its sharpness matched my mind. This was no night to go to sleep. Discount NHL Jerseys . Ivanovic was leading 7-5, 1-0 when Hantuchova withdrew after falling 0-40 behind in the second game. The match started slowly for Ivanovic, who surrendered her first two serves as Hantuchova took a 5-3 lead. http://www.cheapjerseysnhlchina.com/ .com) - Yankee Stadium is the home of the Bronx Bombers, but on Sunday afternoon it will open its gates to host the latest addition of the Hudson River Rivalry. NHL Jerseys Wholesale . Malkin got tangled up with Detroits Luke Glendening early in the third period and his left skate took the brunt of collision with the boards behind Pittsburghs net. China Hockey Jerseys Wholesale . Philadelphia is 2-0 against the Senators this season and scored five goals in each victory. The Flyers recorded a 5-0 win in Ottawa on Nov. 12 and then earned a 5-2 home decision on Nov. 19. The Flyers have claimed three straight and four of the last five encounters with the Sens overall and Philly has won two in a row and three of its past four tests in Canadas capital city. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Florida State Seminoles have climbed in the rankings with an efficient and balanced offense. The defense and rebounding are pretty good, too.Nicole Ekhomu scored 16 points and Ivey Slaughter had 14 points and 10 rebounds to help the No. 8 Seminoles beat Minnesota 75-61 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.Reserve center Chatrice White added 13 points and seven rebounds for Florida State (7-1) in its six straight victory. The Seminoles had 11 blocked shots, eight steals and held Minnesota to 33.9 percent shooting. Its our bread-and-butter, Slaughter said. I think thats what makes us a great team on the offensive end because of how we start with defense. Defense is our key.Florida State outrebounded Minnesota 51-32, including 23 offensive rebounds -- leading to 18 second-chance points.Kenisha Bell scored 17 points and Carlie Wagner added 15 for the Gophers (4-3). They have lost three in a row.It was disappointing, Minnesota coach MarleneStollings said. I just dont think that we handled their physicality. We knew they were a very solid rebounding team. But having played against Georgia and North Carolina and outrebounded both teams, I had higher expectation that we would handle the physicality a little bit better than we did.The Seminoles used a 12-2 run at the start of the second quarter to open up a 42-19 lead, their biggest of the night.STAT OF THE NIGHTFlorida State recorded a season-high with the 23 offensive rebounds. The Seminoles made any chance of a comeback difficult by grabbing seven offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter alone. The Gophers entered the game averaging 47.3 rebounds per game, with a plus-3.3 rebounding margin. Florida State had tallied 38.3 rebounds per game and outrebounded opponents by 7.0 per game.We knew that it would be a battle on the boards, Florida State coach Sue Semrau said. We havent been to the same form that we were last year on the boards. That was something we felt like we needed to grrow coming into this game.dddddddddddd I thought Ivey was tremendous. She is a great rebounder and it was her turn to step up and really assert herself there.STAR WATCHOn the same day she was named one of 50 players on the Naismith Trophy watch list, Wagner was held to her second-lowest scoring game of the season.Wagner entered the game averaging 21.2 points per game to go with 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists. She shot a season-low 12 times against Florida State, hitting six shots. She also had a season low with two rebounds.BIG PICTUREFlorida State: The Seminoles showed they are more than just Leticia Romero and Shakayla Thomas. The teams top two scorers combined for six points. Romero, who entered averaging 14.8 points, had five rebounds and five assists but only took three shots and went scoreless. Thomas was averaging 15.4 points per game. She scored six points on Wednesday. Instead, the bench contributed 37 points, with two players in double figures.Minnesota: The teams shooting is proving to be a concern. The Gophers entered the game averaging 79.2 points, but were shooting 40.4 percent from the field. Minnesota shot 33.9 percent just two games after a season-low 27.1 percent in a loss to Georgia.POLL IMPLICATIONSBack-to-back wins against the Big Ten will certainly look good on Florida States resume, but beating Minnesota wont provide much of a boost. The two previous wins -- against then-No. 25 Gonzaga and 6-1 Michigan -- were more important, as well as the upcoming meeting with No. 19 Florida.UP NEXTFlorida State: An extended stretch of road games, which included winning the Paradise Jam Championship in the Virgin Islands, is over. The Seminoles have some time off before hosting Western Carolina on Dec. 4.Minnesota: Off their first loss at home, the Gophers will try to get back on track when they host Detroit on Dec. 3.
